Preparing Your Deck for the Winter Season

The winterseason places heavy demands on any exterior structure, especially decksand terraces.Even though our synthetic materials require very little maintenance, here are a few tips and recommendations to help you protect your deck and ensure that it still looks great next summer.

  • It’s important to remove any dirt or debris that has accumulated over the summer. You can easily clean the deck board using a nylon brush and a mixture of water and mild soap. Avoid solvents and citrus-based products; dish soap or laundry detergent will do the job nicely. You can also use a pressure washer. Just make sure you set it to a wide spray with a low PSI to avoid damaging the boards. Once you’ve completed the initial cleaning, don’t forget to rinse off the surface to remove any remaining dirt.
  • Since tongue-and-groove products tend to accumulate residue between the boards, it’s recommended to clean them thoroughly, as this residue may retain water, which can turn into ice during the winter and damage the deck board.
  • Do you have rain gutters that let out at the edge of a deck made from our 100% watertight DuxxBak product? It’s important to ensure that the water from these gutters is correctly channeled to avoid the accumulation of snow or ice, which can exert pressure on the ends of the deck boards.
  • During the winter, don’t allow snow to build up on your deck, no matter what kind of material it’s made from. The weight of the snow can jeopardize the structure of any deck or terrace.
  • To avoid scratching your deck, make sure to remove the snow using a plastic shovel. De-icing salt can also be used safely on all of our deck board materials.
  • Finally, if you haven’t yet glued the finishing end pieces on our DuxxBak or Idekk products, fall is the ideal time to do so, in order to prevent them from becoming detached from the boards and ending up buried in the snow.
