Decks & Balconies: What Type of Railing to Choose?

The style of your balcony, deck or staircase just isn’t complete without the addition of railing, which enhances its safety, quality and appearance. Essential for personalizing your project, your outdoor railing must be chosen to fit the style of your property and the available space. There are numerous options for appropriately outfitting your deck.

In order to comply with the regulations of the National Building Code, it is mandatory to install railing around any deck, balcony or staircase. In fact, any patio that’s 24 inches or more off the ground must be equipped with guardrails at least 36 inches high, and if the platform is 72 inches or more off the ground, the guardrails must be at least 42 inches high. If your deck is connected to your pool, you must install guardrails that are at least 48 inches high, and they must be equipped with a self-closing gate with safety latch.

PVC railing

PVC railing with square or rounded balusters is ideal for a very elegant colonial style. The rails are also reinforced with solid aluminum on the inside for added rigidity. It can hold up perfectly to the rigors of our harsh climate, not to mention the fact that our PVC is treated to prevent yellowing due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Aluminum railing

Aluminum railing has a simple, streamlined design with square or rectangular balusters for a more modern style. The balusters can also be replaced with wood panels or with vertical cables for an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape.

Regardless of your project, whether the addition of a deck to your back yard, a balcony for the façade of your home or an exterior staircase, you’ll find durable, superior-quality railing at Camémat, where you can also get all the support you need for your exterior decoration project.
